When I thought about who I wanted to ask to be a Guest Blog Poster for the month of Love, I couldn’t think of anyone but Lance Gillette from Life in a Man’s World. I was very interested on his view about Valentine’s Day, after reading his first groundbreaking blog post! I think his wife, Rufina of Being Rufina, was a bit scared when I asked Lance in front of her. It was cute! But here it is, more Truthful and Beautiful than we both imagined. Here are Lance’s Musings on Love…

I am not a big fan of Valentine’s Day. So why not, you may ask. Is it because I am cheap? You can check with my wife, and she will agree; that is true, when it comes to diamonds and fancy gifts. But, it’s more than that. I feel that women have succumbed to a disingenuous medieval arrangement the rest of the year.
It started off as the Feast of St. Valentine, Chaucer romanticized it, and modern man commercialized it. So, Men…..is this the best we can do? One special day out of the entire year for your wife, girlfriend, significant other. Whatever happened to the other 364 days of the year….?
Which leads me to my song. I used to write my wife love letters for years, on yellow legal-sized paper. No, I am not a lawyer. Then, mysteriously, I stopped writing them. And one day, my wife said “What happened to my yellow love letters??” And, I said “Oh.” Then it dawned on me. When I started composing music about four years ago, I stopped writing these love letters. I realized that all my creative energies and feelings were going into my music instead. So one day, I decided to write my wife her very own love letter in a song.
Here it is.
A Love Song Just For You
(Original Music and Lyrics)

| All I want to do is write a love song Just for you to call your own Fancy words I’ve never known I just seem to get ‘em wrong After all they’re written just for youAll I want to do is write a love song After all its all for you Should I talk about the time I saw you From far away on that day All I know is that my heart hasn’t been the same From the start since that special dayFancy words I’ve never known I just seem to get ‘em wrong After all they’re written just for you Should I make this song another lullaby |
And yes, it did make her cry.
Happy Valentines’ Day.

[P.S. It made me cry too when I heard it...]

Reblogged this on Being Rufina.
Lance is a very lucky man, and Rufina the lucky lady! It’s great that they make their luck for each other in a special way.
Thank you Maddy! Lance and I have been together a long time, and I look forward to growing old and grey…simply knowing what makes the other happy and then taking time to do those things works well for us! Neither one of us is perfect, but we still manage to balance each other where one is weak, the other is strong and vice versa.
So loving & touching. That Rufina, lucky her! Great choice for your guest blogger, Zully. Well done all around.
Oh Tahira! When you come back to the US, come visit us in northern NY. This type of keepin’ it real is best experienced in person. Just ask Zully!
He is truly hysterically brilliant! Love Lance to bits!
What a wonderful invitation and I so am going to take you up on it as soon as the opportunity opens up. I feel like I already know you, so we are just going to have to experience keepin’ it real in person! Xx
Lovely! Please do. Open invitation, maybe Zully will be able to join us too!
Yes! Oh how wonderful that would be!!
Yes, Rufina is a lucky gal! Lance adores her…
Yes, I was afraid! I never know what Mr. “Keepin’ It Real” is going to say! Anyway, I am obviously touched by what he finally came up with here, and I know I am a lucky gal. Thanks for supporting Lance. xoxo Rufina

Great story, beautiful song…every woman should be so lucky to have a song, poem, painting crafted just for them any day of the year. I agree with Lance about Valentine’s day. We should share our love and affection everyday of the year; small gestures are the ones that really matter to me, the ones that are really personal, not anything grand (too contrived).
Thank you for reading and listening Sahbina! You are right about the small gestures; they make a difference. Not everyone is a poet or a songwriter. I think you have the most beautiful name. I bet it would sound very pretty in a song…;)
